Cotswold Canals Trust
The aim of the Cotswolds Canal Trust is to restore two magnificent canals once linked by the Sapperton Tunnel - the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames and Severn Canal.
This charity brings together both dedicated volunteers and and the technical knowhow and commitment of British Waterways. Funding is critical and much currently depends on the outcome of a big Lottery application.
Progress has been remarkable at the western or Stroudwater end. The reopening of the canal has been an important part of a regeneration programme in Stroud District with a significant social and economic impact. Progress has been slower at the eastern, or Cotswold Water Park to Lechlade end, and dialogue continues with various landowners.
Meanwhile additional membership, donations from individuals and offers of practical assistance are all very important.
The Cotswold Canals Trust is administered from my ward in Ciren and I strongly support its goals, which have lots of knock on benefits for the area.
